  2. History. Students take a lesson in fencing in 1944. The academy was founded by John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland, in 1822 with the help and ideas of the French harpist and composer Nicolas Bochsa. [5] . The academy was granted a royal charter by King George IV in 1830. [4] .
