Harriman and Pamela Churchill had had an affair during the war in 1941 which led to the breakdown of her marriage to Randolph Churchill. In 1993, she became the 58th United States Ambassador to France. Harriman died on July 26, 1986, in Yorktown Heights, New York, at the age of 94.
