If they are not within the boundaries of the field, and someone just brings them to the perimeter of the field and sets them down outside, then it's possible to say this: Put these bags of sand on the field.

You might say, "We always play basketball together in the park." That implies that there is a basketball court in the park. You don't really need to say it.
