He had just gotten out of prison the year before after spending some eight years there on an assault charge. But Eldridge had used his prison sentence as a time of education and action.
Pregnant with their first child, Kathleen Cleaver joined her husband in Algeria in July of that year, where she soon gave birth to their first child, Maceo, named after the Cuban general Antonio Maceo.
After 12 years in exile, her husband came back to the US, straight to jail. Although he was released after two years, they broke up, and in 1981, 36 years old Cleaver went back to school with a full scholarship to Yale University.
