The heart of the album, however, was very much the duo of Roger McGough and Mike McGear, who with John Gorman had formed the comedy act Scaffold in Liverpool. After gaining wider recognition as regulars on the television show Gazette , they moved into whimsical comedy-pop as a recording act for Parlophone Records in 1966, with George Martin serving as producer.
