St. John of the Cross (born June 24, 1542, Fontiveros, Spain—died December 14, 1591, Ubeda; canonized 1726; feast day December 14) was one of the greatest Christian mystics and Spanish poets, doctor of the church, reformer of Spanish monasticism, and cofounder of the contemplative order of Discalced Carmelites.He is a patron saint of mystics and contemplatives and of Spanish poets.

Some of his superiors, op-posing his attempts at reforming the Carmelite Order, had commanded him to leave Avila. He had disregarded their instructions, looking instead to the approval granted by the Spanish nuncio, a higher authority, for his efforts.

He joined a Carmelite monastery and then studied theology and philosophy at the university in Salamanaca. After meeting Teresa around 1567, he joined her cause of reforming the Carmelite order and founding the Discalced Carmelites.

His father had come from an upper-class family of silk merchants, but he married a woman of low estate for love, and he was disowned by his family. John was the third boy in this marriage, and at age 3 his father died.
