25 de oct. de 1995 · Mary Wickes, a veteran comedian who most recently delighted audiences as Aunt March in the feature film "Little Women" and as a tough-as-nails singing nun in "Sister Act" and its sequel, has died.
Wickes was also the first to play governess extraordinaire Mary Poppins on a "Studio One" production in the 50s. Her Emmy-nominated turn as the landlady on "Mrs. G. Goes to College" (1961-62), her doctor's wife on "Julia" (1968-71) and her crusty nurse on "Doc" (1975-76) were just so many welcome variations on a much-loved persona.

Mary Wickes' final performance was a voiceover stint as one of the gargoyles in Disney's animated Hunchback of Notre Dame; she died a few days before finishing this assignment, whereupon Jane Withers dubbed in the leftover dialogue.

Wickes was a character actor with a long career. She often played crabby authority figures, which was in line with how she interpreted the Poppins character from the Pamela Lyndon Travers book series that began in 1934.
