Larisa Semyonovna Latynina nació el 27 de diciembre de 1934 en Járkov, en aquel entonces parte de la Unión Soviética. Provenía de una familia modesta, siendo la menor de tres hermanas. Desde pequeña, demostró un talento excepcional para la gimnasia, lo que la llevó a iniciar su entrenamiento a una edad temprana.
Latynina es va casar tres vegades. El seu últim i actual marit és Yuri Izrailovich Feldman (nascut el 1938), membre de l'Acadèmia Russa de Ciències Electrotècniques i antic ciclista de competició. La seva filla d'un matrimoni anterior, Tatyana Ivanovna Latynina (nascuda el 1958), és una ballarina folklòrica.

Aged just 21, Latynina made her Olympic debut at the 1956 Melbourne Games. She fought off fierce competition to win gold in the all-around event. In the apparatus finals she finished first in the vault, second on the uneven bars and in the floor exercise, and fourth on the balance beam. She also led the Soviet Union to victory in the team event.
