Based on a True Story. ‘The Wreck of the Hesperus’ is a moral poem, and the characters are very much original. However, the poem is based on a couple of different disasters of the 1800s. Firstly, Longfellow based this poem on the wreck of the Favorite in 1839, which sank in Norman’s Woe off the coast of Massachusetts.
