William Stanhope was the second of the four sons of Philip, 3rd Earl of Chesterfield (1673-1726). His elder brother was noted for his letters of advice to his (illegitimate) son and for his friendship with Lady Frances Shirley. William was, according to Lord Charlemont, born 'with less good breeding, and more satire' than his brother.
