Georgy Maximilianovich Malenkov was a Russian statesman and Politburo member. After the death of Joseph Stalin, he was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1955. Raised in a wealthy farming family, Malenkov joined the Russian Revolution of 1917 as a volunteer in the Red Army. He came to prominence as an important figure during the Civil War.
