Up until that point, Cronenberg had made a couple of obscure arty films – Stereo (1969) and Crimes of the Future (1970) – and then gained attention with his metaphorically charged B-budget horror films Shivers/They Came From Within/The Parasite Murders (1975) and Rabid (1977).
