Avec son premier long-métrage, Boyz N the Hood (1991), il est non seulement le plus jeune cinéaste à être nommé à l' Oscar du meilleur réalisateur , mais aussi le premier homme noir à recevoir cette reconnaissance de la part de l'Académie [ 2 ] .

John Singleton (Los Angeles, 6 de gener de 1968 - Los Angeles, 28 d'abril de 2019) fou un director de cinema, productor i guionista nord-americà. Fill de pares separats, cursà estudis al Programa d'Escriptura Cinematogràfica a la Universitat de Califòrnia del Sud i guanyà tres premis universitaris, entre els quals destaquen el Premi John Nicholson (1989) i el Premi Robert Riskin (1990).
