Lee Petty was an American stock car racing driver and team owner. He was the patriarch of NASCAR's "first family" of racing, as the father of Richard Petty and Maurice Petty. He was the first three-time winner of the Daytona 500, and was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1997.

Petty was one of the 33 participants in the inaugural NASCAR late-model event on June 19, 1949. He drove a huge Buick Roadmaster, a car Petty claimed "me and some buddies had gone in on together." In the race, Petty lost control and flipped. The car came to a halt in a battered heap, wheezing steam and oil.
