François Mitterrand nació en Jarnac en 1916, en el seno de una familia de clase media. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, se unió a la Resistencia francesa y fue arrestado y condenado a muerte en dos ocasiones. Tras su liberación, comenzó su carrera política y llegó a ser el primer presidente socialista de Francia en 1981.
