Vindice, titular revenger in The Revenger’s Tragedy, warrants examination with regard to context and semantics. First performed in1606, this tale of disturbed individuals, of kin fractures and the iniquities of power spoke to viewers for whom the vengeful systems of medieval England were being replaced by legal codes, by administration and the demands of the state above those of the individual.
