  6. Fletcher was born in Rye, Sussex, England, and baptized on Dec. 20, 1579. When not quite 12, John was apparently admitted to Bene’t (now Corpus Christi) College, Cambridge. From 1596 until 1607 nothing is known of him. Fletcher’s name is first linked with Beaumont’s in Ben Jonson ’s Volpone (1607), to which both men contributed encomiums.
