Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar (born Aug. 16, 1798, Louisville, Ga., U.S.—died Dec. 19, 1859, Richmond, Texas) was the second president of the Republic of Texas.. After an unsuccessful career as a merchant in Alabama, Lamar took a position as secretary to the governor of Georgia.He later became editor of a distinctly states-rights newspaper, the Columbus (Georgia) Enquirer.
