  4. There were 4,586 fires and 13,348 ha burnt between 1 July 2020 and 27 June 2021. The total area burnt is well above the 2019/20 season, and well above the 5- and 10-year averages. This season the North Island accounted for two thirds of the country’s wildfires. The South Island accounted for 88% of the area burnt.
