John Kay is the stage name of Joachim Krauledat (born 12 April 1944, Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany, now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia) a German-born Canadian singer, songwriter and guitarist known as the front man of Steppenwolf. In the Evacuation of East Prussia in early 1945, in harsh winter conditions, his mother first had to flee with the baby boy from the advancing Soviet troops.

Biografia. Kay nasceu na Alemanha, na parte então chamada Prússia Oriental em 12 de abril de 1944, mas foi criado em Toronto, no Canadá. Desde a adolescência, gostava muito de música, inclusive começou a trabalhar em uma rádio amadora, onde podia até tocar seu ritmo preferido, o rock. Kay tocava blues acústico nos bares de Toronto.
When I went on the road in 1980 at John Kay and Steppenwolf, by that time I was the only one left. Ironically, this current line-up of personnel has been together far longer than any previous one. Michael Wilk, keyboardist and co-producer, etc., has been with Steppenwolf since 1981.
