Nat King Cole was born Nathaniel Adams Coles in Montgomery, Alabama, on March 17, 1919. (In his early years of music-making, he dispensed with the "s" at the end of his name.) As a Black child born to a poor family in the American South at the time, he did not have a birth certificate; his March 17 birthday was recalled because it was also St. Patrick's Day.
