Jean Hersholt, 12.7.1886-2.6.1956, filmskuespiller. Født i Kbh, død i Beverley Hills, Californien, begravet sst. (Forest-Lawn). Efter skolegang på den katolske St. Knuds skole i Kbh. kom H. i malerlære. Teatret trak dog mere, og 1904–05 var han skuespillerelev på Dagmarteatret. Han havde mindre roller på Sønderbro teater (bl.a. i Kaptajn Grants Børn) og deltog i nogle turneer.
Jean Hersholt blev direktør og medindehaver af Sol Lesser-United Artists Corporation og fra 1945 præsident for Academy Building Corporation. Han havde en lang række tillidshverv. Han var formand for den danske olympiske komité for Los Angeles 1932, præsident for det danske alderdomshjem Aldersro, for National America-Denmark Association 1943-44 og for America-Denmark Relief 1944-46.
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is awarded periodically by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) at the Governors Awards ceremonies for an individual's "outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes". Prior to 2009 and in 2021, this award was presented during the main Oscars ceremony.

Jean Hersholt. Actor, Director. Born July 12, 1886 in Copenhagen, Denmark. If ever there was a Great Dane in Hollywood it was Jean Hersholt - and one of its great hearts as well. He was from a well-known Danish stage and entertainment family that had toured throughout Europe performing with young Jean as an essential cast member.
