Frank Stella (Malden, Massachusetts, 1936) breaks into the New York art scene at the same time the second generation of Abstract Expressionism begins to be recognised. In his early work, artists like Barnet Newman, Jasper Johns, Jackson Pollock and Ad Reinhardt form the basis of Stella’s career which, in under two years, reaches the subversion of that heritage.
Frank Philip Stella, né le 12 mai 1936 à Malden (Massachusetts), est un peintre américain considéré comme un précurseur du minimalisme ainsi qu'un des principaux représentants de l’Op Art avec Joseph Albers et du shaped canvas avec Charles Hinman. Frank Stella fait des études d'art à la Phillips Academy d'Andover (Massachusetts), puis d'histoire à l'Université de Princeton.

Frank Stella, conocido por sus influyentes primeras obras minimalistas, falleció el sábado 4 de mayo de 2024 en su residencia en Nueva York a los 87 años, tras una batalla contra el linfoma. A pesar de la presión de los críticos, Stella resistió la interpretación de su trabajo, reflejada en su famosa afirmación: "Lo que observas es lo que percibes".
