He first rose to critical acclaim in the 1950s with his bright, multi-paneled and largely monochromatic canvases. Maintaining a persistent focus on the dynamic relationships between shape, form and color, Kelly was one of the first artists to create irregularly shaped canvases.

Ellsworth Kelly nasce a Newburgh, New York (USA), il 31 maggio 1923. Studia al Pratt Institute di Brooklyn (1941-43) e frequenta la scuola del Museum of Fine Arts di Boston (1946-48). L'anno seguente si trasferisce in Francia e si iscrive alla École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi.
Kelly's concern with color as form was thus established. After returning to the United States in 1954, Kelly worked with large single biomorphic shapes in black and white. Primary colors reappeared in his paintings after 1957, either in double or triple variations or singly in contrast with white, as in Blue on White [SAAM, 1969.47.63].
