The film's title card reads "W. Somerset Maugham's Miss Sadie Thompson." The working title of the film was Rain. Maugham's short story was turned into a play, Rain, by Clemence Randolph and John Colton. A 2 Aug 1950 HR news item notes that producer J. Arthur Rank considered purchasing the play's rights, held by Mary Pickford and Lester Cowan, and casting Bette Davis as "Sadie."
