Spiritual yearning is implied on the track ‘Cage’ in a repetitive phrase by a robotic male vocal, despite its crude carnal expression.
As befits its title, Anhedoniac is a very dark, oppressive album, at times downright unbreathable. Jarboe gets closer to Diamanda Galás than she ever has, especially since she really sounds possessed at times, but without Diamanda’s redeeming aspect. Obviously, Anhedoniac is the repulsive polar opposite of the mesmerising Sacrificial Cake.
