  1. Rubén González was born in 1919 in Santa Clara, central Cuba, and studied at Cienfuegos Conservatoire. He was planning to become a doctor, but his love of Cuban son took over. In 1941 he moved to Havana to begin his professional career playing dance music with some of the major orchestras in Cuba, beginning his recording career in 1943 with the pioneering bandleader Arsenio Rodríguez.
