Just remembered watching this film in 1999. I was the same age as the 'Pups' at the time it was made, the film had quite an impact on me. It really captures the head space of the American youth, in particular the ones with unstable, underlining mental conditions. In addition to the environment they're forced to live in/through.

If instead of Van Hoy and Barton the movie had starred safer or more circumspect actors, the energy would have flagged and the flaws of the quick production would have been more of a problem. As it is, "Pups" is a kind of headlong rush toward doom.
