Gazzaniga's son, Giorgio, said his father passed away in his sleep at home in Milan. "He just didn't wake up this morning. It was a peaceful death," Giorgio Gazzaniga told The Associated Press on Monday, adding that his father had been in the hospital recently for a series of minor ailments.

Silvio Gazzaniga fue un escultor italiano, famoso por ser el diseñador del Trofeo de la Copa Mundial de Fútbol de la FIFA, que creó mientras trabajaba en la compañía Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni. Se graduó en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Brera.
Silvio Gazzaniga fue el tercer escultor en intervenir en el diseño para que la Supercopa se vea como es hoy en día. En 1072 el primer diseño era muy grande y pesado, en 1976 lo reemplazaron por uno de madera con una placa de oro de la UEFA y ya en 1987 Gazzaniga diseñó una copa mucho más ergonómica y ligera.
