He won an Academy Award for best actor for his role in the movie Harry and Tonto (1974).
Personally. Al Pacino is my win for 1974. But I don't hate Art Carney's win and understand the nomination. Harry And Tonto is a cute, decent film and Carney carries the entire film on its back by giving a subtle, convincing, and touching performance. For a guy in his mid-50s at the time, he looked and acted the part of 70 year old convincingly.

I admit that I am unfamiliar with Carney's work. In the 1970s he was a popular comedian and TV star who was most well-known for his role in the 1950s sitcom The Honeymooners. I am sure that Carney was a capable actor, but why did he win the Oscar over Pacino?
