26 de abr. de 2024 · Following award-winning recordings of Purcell’s King Arthur, Berlioz’s Grande Messe des morts, Britten’s War Requiem and Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Gabrieli has recorded Elgar’s much-loved oratorio, The Dream of Gerontius – using original instruments from around the time of the 1900 premiere.

Based on a poem by St. John Henry Newman (pictured), it traces the journey of a soul from death to the afterlife. Adrian Boult conducts a memorable performance.

[42] For the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival of 1900, he set Cardinal John Henry Newman 's poem The Dream of Gerontius for soloists, chorus and orchestra. Richter conducted the premiere, which was marred by a poorly prepared chorus, which sang badly. [43]
