Biography. Romare Bearden was born to (Richard) Howard and Bessye Bearden in Charlotte, North Carolina, the seat of Mecklenburg County, on 2 September 1911. Due to Jim Crow laws, life became increasingly difficult for African Americans, even for such college educated and economically successful families as the Beardens.
Born in North Carolina; studied in the U.S. and in Paris; lived mostly in New York City. Dynamic artist who created archetypal figures of African Americans and others by combining different kinds of images, using oil paint or collage materials.
