Miles Davis and Gil Evans began their work with large ensembles in the late ’50s. Free jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman wrote a long piece for the London Symphony Orchestra, Skies in America, in 1972.

It was even tougher for the Steve Banks Trio given that they played in the bar after the main act had finished. However the contrasting sound and style between the two fretworkers was enough to avoid obvious comparisons.
