The work was not well known when the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) purchased it in 1941, but it soon became one of van Gogh’s most famous works.

He produced more than 2,000 artworks, consisting of around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. In 2013, Sunset at Montmajour became the first full-sized Van Gogh painting to be newly confirmed since 1928.

Today, the entire town and Van Gogh’s lives are entirely interwoven; you won’t find a street without art dedicated to the man or a plaque signifying that he produced one of his final pieces there.
