The Bombay (Mumbai City) Session of the Indian National Congress on 26th October, 1934, was a turning point for the organisation owing to a number of major changes that were made in the constitution of the Congress. The session was conducted under the presidency of Dr Rajendra Prasad.
The Party held its first session in 1885 in Bombay where W.C. Bonnerjee presided over it. After Indian independence in 1947, Congress emerged as a catch-all and secular party, dominating Indian politics for the next 50 years.
On 28 December 1885, the Indian National Congress was founded at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay, with 72 delegates in attendance. Hume assumed office as the General Secretary, and Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee of Calcutta was elected president.
