William Southcombe Lloyd Webber CBE (11 March 1914 – 29 October 1982) was an English organist and composer, who achieved some fame as a part of the modern classical music movement whilst commercially facing mixed opportunities.
The possessor of a remarkable melodic gift which he frequently allied with surprisingly ‘purple’ harmonies, Lloyd Webber was a composer who knew exactly what he wanted to say and how to say it. When ‘Aurora’ was recorded for Philips in 1986 by Lorin Maazel and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, it was a revelation.
From 1945 to the mid-1950s William Lloyd Webber wrote music in many different forms: vocal and instrumental, choral and organ, chamber and orchestral.

The purpose of this essay is threefold: firstly, to present a brief biographical introduction of William Lloyd Webber, secondly, to give an overview of the literature concerning the composer and thirdly, a selective ‘reception history’ of his music on CD and in the concert hall. The essay concludes with a short discography.
