At the Rebbe's Table is the third recording by guitarist Tim Sparks on the Tzadik Records label. History. Producer John Zorn combined Sparks with Masada alumni Greg Cohen and Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista on Sparks' previous release Tanz, and this time adds guitarist Marc Ribot on nylon-string guitar and Erik Friedlander on cello. Greg Cohen (born July 13, 1953) is an American jazz bassist who has been a member of John Zorn's Masada quartet and worked with numerous other noted musicians for over four decades.
On a tune like “Todos Si Hueron,” Cyro Baptista’s undulant percussion and Greg Cohen’s coolly seductive bass put us in mind mainly of Brazil. As noted in Sparks’ notes about the project, one historical link is to the Judeo-Arabic culture in Spain, the guitar’s ancestral homeland.
Greg Cohen's bass holds up the bottom harmonic end, walking at a slow lope or quickening the pace with agile-fingered plucks. Erik Friedlander comes more to the fore on the title track, and engages in an improvisatory repartee with the guitarists that is among the most absorbing of the disc in terms of accuracy and intricacy.
