1 de abr. de 2001 · While there’s power and depth to his solos, Speed normally avoids hard bop and the blues/ballad/showtune menu traditionalists consider essential to being a jazz musician. Instead, he’s a fine improviser whose skills are the best thing evident on his current CD Emit.
Chris Speed’s third release for Songlines with his band Yeah No features sweet/astringent offbeat grooves and evocative soundscapes from one of New York’s most finely attuned working units. On Emit, the density and harmonic complexity of the improvising contrasts with the simplicity of the compositional material.
