Jean-Baptiste Illinois Jacquet (October 30, 1922 – July 22, 2004) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, best remembered for his solo on "Flying Home", critically recognized as the first R&B saxophone solo.
Jean-Batiste ‘Illinois’ Jacquet was a tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader who was also one of the few jazz musicians to master the bassoon. He is best remembered as the tenor saxophonist who defined the crowd-pleasing ‘screech and honk’ style of playing the instrument.
Illinois Jacquet (born October 31, 1922, Broussard, Louisiana, USA - died July 22, 2004, Queens, New York City, New York, USA) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader. He also doubled on bassoon, being one of the few jazz players to master that instrument.

Illinois Jacquet was one of the hottest saxophone players of the be-bop 40s. As the 60s rolled around, with interest in bop declining, Illinois began to try out different sounds, including this 1963 foray into commercially viable soul jazz called “The Message”.

30 de nov. de 2022 · Illinois Jacquet saw no reason to alter his style after the late-1940s. He always had a robust tone, an emotional yet usually subtle style, and swung at every tempo. He starred on an album in 1959 at the head of an 11-piece group (Illinois Jacquet Flies Again) but mostly led smaller units.
