Corinne, or Italy (French: Corinne ou l'Italie), also known as Corinne, is a novel by the Genevan and French writer Germaine de Staël, published in 1807. It relates a love story between an Italian poet, Corinne, and Lord Oswald Nelvil, an English nobleman.
I cannot flatter myself on having faithfully represented one of whom it is impossible to form an idea till she herself is known; but her presence is left to Rome, as among the chief blessings beneath its brilliant sky. Corinne is the link that binds her friends to each other.
Corinne, or Italy (1807) is both the story of a love affair between Oswald, Lord Nelvil and a beautiful poetess, and an homage to the landscape, literature and art of Italy. On arriving in Italy, Oswald immediately falls under Corinne’s magical spell as she is crowned a national genius at the Captitol.
Madame de Stael's second novel Corinne (1806), which takes place mostly in Italy but also in Scotland, infuriated Napoleon because Stael dared to ignore France and suggest that French writers had something to learn from the artistic milieu of Italy and from an intellectually superior heroine.
