Ghost ( Hamlet) The ghost of Hamlet's father is a character from William Shakespeare 's play Hamlet. In the stage directions, he is referred to as " Ghost ". His name is also Hamlet, and he is referred to as King Hamlet to distinguish him from the Prince, his son and the protagonist of the story.
While Hamlet seems primarily concerned with the latter motive, the Ghost is keenly aware of both purposes. This kingly sense of justice motivates the Ghost to appear to Hamlet one final time after Hamlet accidentally kills Polonius and subsequently becomes enraged at Gertrude.
When the ghost tells Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius and charges the prince with seeking vengeance, Hamlet takes the ghost’s words to heart. Though Horatio, Marcellus, Barnardo, and Francisco can all see the ghost, it’s possible that the spirit can choose to whom it is visible.
