De Bruijn began swimming at age 7 and participated in her first international meet at age 12.
Inge de Bruijn is the most successful Dutch athlete in history, winning eight Olympic medals, including four golds, and 11 World Records in freestyle and butterfly. She trained with Hall of Fame coach Paul Bergen and was named World Female Swimmer of the Year in 2000 and 2001.
