Nascido em 17 de outubro de 1922, no Rio de Janeiro, Bonfá deixou um legado significativo na música popular brasileira, especialmente no gênero da bossa nova.
Recorded over 50 albums as a leader for such labels as Capitol Records, Epic, Atlantic, Verve, RCA, Ranwood, Cherry Pie, Chesky Records, Paddle Wheel and Milestone Records. Worked extensively with producers Bobby Scott, Creed Taylor and Arnaldo DeSouteiro.

Pioneer of bossa nova, Luiz is the author of Manhã de carnaval and Samba de Orfeu (both with Antonio Maria). He lived in the USA in the 60s and 70s, where achieved great recognition. His compositions were recorded by Frank Sinatra, Sara Vaughan and Tonny Bennet.
