John Letcher (March 29, 1813 – January 26, 1884) was an American lawyer, journalist, and politician. He served as a Representative in the United States Congress, was the 34th Governor of Virginia during the American Civil War, and later served in the Virginia General Assembly.
John Letcher, best known as Virginia’s Civil War governor from 1860 through 1863, was born in Lexington, Va., on 29 March 1813 to middle-class merchant and businessman William Houston Letcher and his wife, Elizabeth Davidson. The Davidsons were a prominent Shenandoah Valley family, whose connections benefitted Letcher throughout his life.
