A la muerte de John Flamsteed, en 1720 le sucedió como astrónomo real y director del Observatorio de Greenwich, cargo que ocupó hasta su muerte. Se casó en 1682 con Mary Tooke y tuvieron dos hijas y un hijo. Halley murió en Greenwich en 1742 a los 85 años.
