John Playfair, también nombrado como Johnes Player (10 de marzo de 1748-20 de julio de 1819), fue un matemático y geólogo escocés. John Playfair FRSE, FRS (10 [citation needed] March 1748 – 20 July 1819) was a Church of Scotland minister, remembered as a scientist and mathematician, and a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh.
Publicó su primera obra en 1795, Elementos de Geometría, en la que destaca una reformulación del postulado de las paraleleas de Euclides. En 1805 pasó a ser profesor de filosofía natural, impartiendo clases de física y astronomía. En 1812 y 1816 publicó dos tomos de Esquemas de Filosofía Natural.
