Butler W. Lampson FRS (born December 23, 1943) is an American computer scientist best known for his contributions to the development and implementation of distributed personal computing.
Butler designed and coded most of the microcoded parts of the operating system and worked on the SPL system programming language. Around this time he also devised the access matrix model for computer security, unifying the ideas of capabilities and access control lists.
