Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853) har fået æren af at være den store fornyer af dansk kunst. Omkring 1815 skabte han grundlaget for en hel epokes malerkunst, den såkaldte danske guldalder. I de 35 år, han var professor på Det kgl. Danske Kunstakademi i København, blev stort set alle unge danske malere påvirket af ham.
