The city, built on reclaimed land, was founded in 1967 and was named after Cornelis Lely , who engineered the Afsluitdijk that made the reclamation possible.

Lelystad is the city of engineer C. Lely and the starting point of Flevoland, the youngest province of the Netherlands. Explore its natural and cultural attractions, such as the Nieuw Land National Park, Batavialand, Bataviastad Fashion Outlet and the Aviodrome aerospace museum.
It became the capital of the newly created Flevoland province in 1986. Located next to a land-reclamation dike, Lelystad has a small fishing harbour; boats have access to Amsterdam through the Oostvaarder Canal.
