History. Early history. Purple Mountain or Zijin Shan, located to the east of the walled city of Nanjing, is the origin of the nickname "Jinling". The water in the front is Xuanwu Lake. Archaeological discovery shows that the so-called "Nanjing Man" lived more than 500,000 years ago.
